High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes are a petroleum-based membranes/liners product together with geotextiles, geonets, geocomposites and others are collectively known as geosynthetics. These liners are used as protective barriers to prevent environmental degradation of groundwater, aquifers, protection of man-made structures such as storage tanks from chemical corrosion, earth canals and earth ponds for better water retention. It is used to protect our water resources mainly from harmful waste substances such as landfill leachate, sewerage and industrial waste-water from entering the ground and cause detrimental environmental issues. The geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) are natural, environmental friendly liners integrated with a sandwiched layer of sodium bentonite clay between geotextiles carriers. With this feature, it enhances and complements the effectiveness of normal geomembranes; enabling the composite lining system to “self-heal” in the event that if the lining system were to be accidentally punctured. The “self-healing” mechanism provided by the sodium bentonite clay’s inherent swelling properties will seal the puncture by itself when hydrated. It is designed to provide stabilization by enhancing and maintaining vegetative covers to the areas applied.
